Aretha Franklin calls off her wedding (AP)

NEW YORK ? Aretha Franklin won't be getting fitted for a wedding gown after all: She's called off her engagement.

In a statement released Monday, her representative said her wedding to Willie Wilkerson wasn't going to happen.

Franklin said things were moving too fast and "a number of things" had not been thought through.

She says she won't be commenting about it because of "the very personal and sensitive nature of it."

It's not clear if they are still a couple.

Franklin announced shortly after New Year's Day that she was getting married, and said she planned a wedding in either the Hamptons or Miami.

Romney to release taxes, Gingrich ready for Obama (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Newt Gingrich worked to capitalize Sunday on his upset victory in South Carolina's Republican presidential primary, while Mitt Romney moved quickly to cut his losses before the next contest with a promise to release his income tax returns within 48 hours.

Gingrich said in a round of television interviews that his win, both unexpected and unexpectedly large, showed he was the Republican best able to go toe to toe with President Barack Obama in the fall. "I think virtually everybody who looks at the campaign knows I represent the largest amount of change of any candidate, and I think that's why they see me as representing their interest and their concerns, not representing Wall Street or representing the politicians of Washington," he said.

Romney argued that point, but not another, agreeing in a television interview that he had made a mistake by refusing to release his tax returns before the South Carolina vote. "If it was a distraction, we want to get back to the real issues in the campaign -- leadership, character and vision for America, how to get jobs in America, and how to rein in the excessive scale of the federal government," he said.

The former Massachusetts governor, who made millions in business, said he will make his 2010 return and an estimate for 2011 available online on Tuesday.

The decision marked a concession, as if one were needed, that Romney had stumbled on his way through South Carolina, a state where he led handsomely in the polls several days before the primary.

Florida votes next, on Jan. 31, a 50-delegate contest in one of the most expensive campaign states in the country, and one that Romney can ill afford to lose.

The former governor was an easy winner in the New Hampshire primary earlier in the month. Before that, he was a close runner-up behind former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum in Iowa caucuses where the vote count was so confused that he was originally announced the victor.

Despite his loss on Saturday, Romney remains the contender with the largest and best-funded organization. "Three states in now, we got 47 more to go," he said, adding he was looking forward to the rest.

For all the political momentum gained in South Carolina, Gingrich made it immediately obvious that he is short on funds. He urged supporters via Tweet Saturday night to donate money, and then announced the name of his campaign website while making a nationally televised victory speech.

With their comments, both Romney and Gingrich indicated the race was a two-way competition, likely to go into the spring if not longer.

Santorum had other ideas.

"We're going to Florida and beyond," he said. As he did in a pair of debates in South Carolina, he criticized both Gingrich ? calling him a "very high-risk candidate" ? and Romney, whom he called a moderate ill-suited to appeal to conservative voters.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul, the fourth contender, has already said he will skip Florida and focus on Nevada and other caucus states.

Gingrich won South Carolina despite being outspent. But in addition to the prohibitive cost of campaigning in Florida, a long-term shortage of funds can cripple efforts to compete in the fast-paced series of primaries and caucuses ahead.

Aides say the former speaker raised $9 million in the final quarter of 2011.

Romney has reported taking in $24 million over the same period.

In addition, both men are supported by outside groups that have paid for millions in television advertising. So far, though, Romney's has spent more, and to greater evident effect.

When Gingrich surged in the polls two weeks before the Iowa caucuses, Restore Our Future responded with hard-hitting ads that knocked the former speaker off-stride and protected Romney's standing.

Gingrich lacked the funds to respond effectively, lashed out angrily, and sank to a poor fourth place finish. He did not begin to recover until the final days of the race in South Carolina, when he was aided by Romney's missteps, Texas Gov. Rick Perry's mid-week withdrawal and endorsement, and his own strong debate performances.

Also in the interim, Gingrich supporters said that casino magnate Sheldon Adelson had written a $5 million check to an outside group set up to help the former speaker.

Allies of Gingrich have made no secret of their hope that Adelson will help again in Florida, where the pro-Romney organization shows no signs of slowing down.

Even before the polls closed in South Carolina, Romney and a group supporting him had spent $7 million on television advertising in Florida. So far, the only other political ads to run in the state were financed by ASCME, a labor union working to weaken the standing of the former Massachusetts governor.

While a protracted battle for the nomination could benefit Obama, the signs pointed toward a particularly bruising struggle in Florida.

"I don't think that the people of this country are going to choose as the next president of the United States a person who spent 40 years in Washington as a congressman and a lobbyist," Romney said. "That is not going to be, in my opinion, be the most effective way to replace the current president who also spent his career in politics."

Said Gingrich: "I think South Carolinians were the first state to really understand how liberal Governor Romney's record was" as Massachusetts governor said Gingrich. He said his main rival lost ground "as people began to realize that he'd been pro-choice, pro-gun control, pro-tax increase in a whole range of areas that despite his advertising and his pretending, it was clear that he was way to the left of South Carolinians."

With votes counted from all of South Carolina's precincts, Gingrich had 40 percent to Romney's 28 percent. Santorum won 17 percent to Paul's 13 percent.

Gingrich won at least 23 of the 25 delegates at stake. The other two have yet to be allocated.

Gingrich appeared on NBC's "Meet the Press," CBS' "Face the Nation" and CNN's "State of the Union." Romney was on "Fox News Sunday," while Santorum was on ABC's "This Week" and CNN.

PCE in drinking water linked to an increased risk of mental illness

Friday, January 20, 2012

The solvent tetrachloroethylene (PCE) widely used in industry and to dry clean clothes is a neurotoxin known to cause mood changes, anxiety, and depression in people who work with it. To date the long-term effect of this chemical on children exposed to PCE has been less clear, although there is some evidence that children of people who work in the dry cleaning industry have an increased risk of schizophrenia. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Environmental Health found that exposure to PCE as a child was associated with an increased risk of bipolar disorder and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

From 1968, until the early 1980s, water companies in Massachusetts installed vinyl-lined (VL/AC) water pipes that were subsequently found to be leaching PCE into the drinking water supply. Researchers from Boston University followed the incidence of mental illness amongst adults from Cape Cod, born between 1969 and 1983, who were consequently exposed to PCE both before birth and during early childhood.

While there was no increase seen in the incidence of depression, regardless of PCE exposure, people with prenatal and early childhood exposure to PCE had almost twice the risk of bipolar disorder, compared to an unexposed group, and their risk of PTSD was raised by 50%.

Dr Ann Aschengrau from Boston University School of Public Health warned, "It is impossible to calculate the exact amount of PCE these people were exposed to - levels of PCE were recorded as high as 1,550 times the currently recommended safe limit. While the water companies flushed the pipes to address this problem, people are still being exposed to PCE in the dry cleaning and textile industries, and from consumer products, and so the potential for an increased risk of illness remains real."

Venture capital investments up 19 percent in 4Q

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Funding for startups rose 19 percent in the fourth quarter as venture capitalists fueled money into more companies in the Internet, clean technology and other sectors.

According to a study released Friday, startup investments grew to $6.57 billion in the October-December quarter from $5.52 billion in the same period in 2010. The volume of deals, though, did not keep up with the amount of money invested. There were 844 deals completed in the fourth quarter, down from 861 a year earlier.

Called the MoneyTree report, the study was conducted by PriceWaterHouseCoopers and the National Venture Capital Association based on data from Thomson Reuters.

For all of 2011, venture investments jumped 22 percent to $28.43 billion, in 3,673 deals. That's up from $23.26 billion in 2010, when the money went to 3,526 deals.

Venture capitalists piped $133.9 million into 80 seed-stage companies in the fourth quarter. That's down from $233.2 million going to 90 such startups in the fourth quarter of 2010. The decline suggests some caution on the part of venture capitalists looking at the newest, often most risky, startup investments.

A total of 364 early-stage companies snapped up $2.27 billion in venture funding during the quarter. That compares with $1.48 billion going to 318 early-stage startups in the last three months of 2010. The report said 222 companies in the expansion stage received $2.36 billion in funding, compared with 270 companies snagging about the same amount a year earlier. In the later stage, 178 startups received $1.8 billion in the fourth quarter, while $1.4 billion went to 183 companies a year earlier.

By industry, software companies received the most funding with $1.76 billion snagged in the fourth quarter, followed by biotechnology with $1.27 billion.

San Francisco-based internet storage locker Dropbox Inc. got the single-largest investment during the quarter, $250 million. In second place was Better Place Inc., which is based in Palo Alto and builds infrastructure and systems for electric vehicles, with $200 million.

John S. Taylor, head of research at the National Venture Capital Association, said the figures show "cautious optimism."

Snapdragon-toting Sony smartphones to get extra global positioning help from The Other GPS

Frustrated by the performance of GPS on your current Sony Ericsson phone? Well, if you've got the latest software and a device carrying Qualcomm's Snapdragon S2 or S3 processor, you're in luck. Alongside bright new darlings like the Xperia S and Xperia ion, all will be able to hook up to GLONASS, Russia's very own interpretation of GPS. Support on another global positioning network will increase the total of satellites orbiting around you from 31 to 55 -- more ways to find exactly where you got lost. GLONASS support has already launched on smartphone luminaries such as the iPhone 4S and the pocket-stretching Galaxy Note, but we're very happy to hear that the extra functionality will arrive on older Xperia handsets. According to the developer's own testing, the GLONASS assistance often improved accuracy by as much as 50 percent and should similarly reduce the chances of us being outed as map illiterates. You can grab more info on all the GLONASS goodness at the source below.

Isner is out at Australian Open, as are all US men (AP)

MELBOURNE, Australia ? For the first time in four decades, there will be no American man in the fourth round of the Australian Open. John McEnroe thinks he knows why.

The seven-time Grand Slam champion, who is working as a TV analyst at Melbourne Park, suspects a lack of passion.

"You could certainly wonder whether our guys are as hungry as some of the others," McEnroe said on Fox after John Isner lost to 18th-seeded Feliciano Lopez in the third round Friday. "It really comes down to the individual. If people have heart or desire, that to me is more important than any shot."

This is the first time no U.S. player reached the men's fourth round at the Australian Open since 1973 ? when no Americans traveled to the tournament.

Isner, the last American man left in the singles draw, lost to Lopez 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-7 (0), 6-1. It was the 6-foot-9 Isner's second straight five-set match after he knocked out David Nalbandian in a 4-hour, 41-minute thriller.

"It's very ugly, to be honest, to have no one in the round of 16," Isner said. "We've got to try to rectify that next time the big tournaments roll around.

"It's very disappointing. That's not a good effort from the Americans in this tournament. I knew going in today I was the last one left and I wanted to keep on going, but just didn't happen."

Instead, Lopez earned a fourth-round match against Rafael Nadal, who won the 2009 Australian Open and has 10 major titles to his credit.

The last American man to win the Australian Open was Andre Agassi in 2003. No. U.S. man has won a major since Andy Roddick at the 2003 U.S. Open.

"We've been spoiled with the success we've had in the past," McEnroe said.

At least the Americans still have Serena Williams, the 13-time Grand Slam champion who is on a 16-match winning streak at Melbourne Park. She won titles in 2009 and 2010 but missed last year because of injury. On Saturday night, the five-time champion will play Greta Arn of Hungary in the third round.

Before that, defending champion Novak Djokovic will take on Nicolas Mahut of France at Rod Laver Arena.

Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova was on court for 38 minutes Saturday before advancing to the fourth round. The second-seeded Czech was leading 6-0, 1-0 on Rod Laver Arena when Maria Kirilenko retired with a left thigh injury.

It was the fourth retirement of the women's tournament.

Kvitova, one of four players who could end the season's first major with the top ranking, will face Ana Ivanovic of Serbia or unseeded American Vania King in the Round of 16.

When four American men reached the fourth round of the U.S. Open in September ? only two majors after no Americans reached the round of 16 at the French Open ? Roddick talked about a "healthy jealousy" contributing to the improvement. There hadn't been four American men into the fourth round at the U.S. Open since 1995.

It didn't last long in Melbourne. Among the best contenders, No. 8 Mardy Fish lost to Alejandro Falla of Colombia in the second round before Roddick hurt his right hamstring and had to retire from his second-round match with former No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt.

Ryan Harrison took No. 4 Andy Murray to four sets before losing; Ryan Sweeting lost to No. 5 David Ferrer; and Donald Young lost to qualifier Lukas Lacko.

"People expect us to contend for Grand Slams," McEnroe said. "I think there's a lot of tennis fans, but to have an American contending and winning majors, that would make a big difference."

The pressure of being last man standing got to Isner on Friday when he lapsed in the last set after dominating the fourth-set tiebreaker.

"It just got away from me. I just wasn't as sharp as I needed to be," he said. "It just kind of spiraled out of control there, and it just ... I couldn't climb out of the hole I dug."

"I honestly felt like it was more mental than anything," he added. "Just like the whole match I wasn't really that sharp."

Now he has to consider a Davis Cup series next month against a Swiss team that could feature Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka.

"That's not an ideal draw for a first round. But, yeah, it's going to be tough," Isner said. "It's away, and, you know, more than likely I think if Roger plays we're probably the underdogs."

Djokovic started 2011 on a 41-match winning streak and finished it with the No. 1 ranking and three of the four major titles. His two main rivals are already through to the third round on the other side of the draw.

Nadal had a 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 win over Lacko, the last qualifier in the draw. Apart from having his right knee heavily taped, he showed no sign of pain from the bizarre injury ? he hurt his knee while sitting in a chair at his hotel ? that made him think he might miss this tournament.

"The knee is fine ... being in the fourth round without losing a set, it's fantastic news," he said.

Federer followed with an almost flawless performance in a 7-6 (6), 7-5, 6-3 win over 6-foot-10 Croatian Ivo Karlovic. Federer will play Australian teenager Bernard Tomic on Sunday in the fourth round. Tomic, a Wimbledon quarterfinalist last year, had a tough 4-6, 7-6 (0), 7-6 (6), 2-6, 6-3 win over 13th-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine.

An early rematch of last year's women's final is already in place, with defending champion Kim Clijsters and Li Na both winning Friday night to set up a meeting in the fourth round.

Clijsters advanced with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Daniela Hantuchova. Li didn't even finish four games before Anabel Medina Garrigues quit with a badly sprained right ankle.

Medina Garrigues twisted her right ankle in the second game and needed treatment on the court. Li won the first three games and had taken the first two points in the fourth game on Medina Garrigues' serve when the Spaniard hit the ball into the air with her racket. She then went ? in tears ? to the net to retire.

"It was really tough, because she tried to continue to play, so I don't know (if) it's like real or fake ... some players they do that," Li said. Then, "I saw she couldn't run and she started to cry. I have to say I am so sorry for her."

The winner of the Clijsters-Li match will likely face a quarterfinal against top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki, who has not dropped a set in advancing to the fourth round as she continues her quest for a first Grand Slam title. She beat Monica Niculescu of Romania 6-2, 6-2, while third-seeded Victoria Azarenka defeated Mona Barthel 6-2, 6-4.

Wozniacki will next play former No. 1 Jelena Jankovic, who beat Christina McHale of the U.S. 6-2, 6-0.

That left just Williams and King as the only Americans in singles at the Australian Open. King plays Ivanovic on Saturday.

Kindle Fire firmware update 6.2.2 brings full-screen browsing

The fine folks over at Amazon have further flushed out the firmware on its fiercely popular Fire tablet. Upgrading your Kindle Fire to version 6.2.2 will bring a handful of small performance tweaks, bugs fixes and, most notably, add a full-screen mode to the device's Silk browser. If you've gone ahead and rooted your Fire, applying the firmware bump will kill superuser access -- although a fresh build of BurritoRoot 2 should get you back on the straight and narrow. The new code is being pushed out over-the-air as we type, while those that enjoy the endorphin rush associated with instant gratification -- and know how to manually update a Kindle -- can find a link to the 6.2.2 firmware file below. Happy updating!

Newt Gingrich Makes a Comeback in South Carolina (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | According to the most recent polling data, the South Carolina presidential primary race is tightening. It seems that the man on the move at this moment is the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Newt Gingrich. There has been an even larger surge in nationwide polling as Rasmussen has Gingrich trailing Mitt Romney by only three percentage points, 30 to 27. Some are crediting Gingrich's rise to a strong debate performance on January 16 in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Newt Gingrich is an original, outside the box thinker. Sometimes this can get him into trouble and make him sound, to use Mitt Romney's word, zany. However at other times Gingrich is capable of brilliance. In the debate on January 16 he made some valid points about teaching work. He did not single out any race of people. Gingrich simply stated that it would be an excellent way to provide jobs for young people that need money.

Of course Newt's debate performance is very dependent upon your political perspective. Conservatives in the debate audience were quick to applaud Gingrich. Afterwards, those on the left, including former President Jimmy Carter, criticized his comments as being just short of racist. That is a bridge too far even for Jimmy Carter.

My own view is that Mr. Gingrich was on track, for the most part, with his comments in the debate. Americans need jobs. Ignoring the unemployment data for a moment, a recent government report indicated that over 48 percent of American households received some type of government assistance in the first quarter of 2010. This would seem to indicate that at least some Americans have lost the work ethic or the ability to hold a job. Any politician should realize that we need to restore this basic building block of society. America needs productive citizens contributing to the economy, not more dependency on government.

Newt Gingrich's statement about Barack Obama being the food stamp president is also correct. The latest data show that there are 44.7 million Americans receiving food stamps. That is an amazing number when you consider that the total population of the United States in 2010 was just under 309 million people. I thought that Newt Gingrich did a good job of contrasting the conservative approach of personal responsibility and limited government with the current state of affairs in this country. The primary voters in South Carolina will be able to voice their opinion on his approach on January 21.

HTC EVO 3D: poof, no more Carrier IQ software

It's been exactly a month since we received word that Sprint was disabling Carrier IQ software installed on its carrier-branded devices, and this week we witnessed a firmware update on the HTC EVO 3D that quietly removes all traces of the tracking software completely. Neither company was forthcoming about this particular feature disappearing -- we have a hunch they're trying to keep the public from being reminded that CIQ ever happened -- but Android Authority discovered that both HTC IQAgent and IQRD were completely gone after the update. So add this to the list of the build's other performance enhancements, and here's to hoping that we'll start seeing a plethora of other devices getting similar releases.

DB, NYSE stress European nature of deal in EU letter (Reuters)

FRANKFURT (Reuters) ? Top executives at Deutsche Boerse (DB1Gne.DE) and NYSE Euronext (NYX.N) sent a letter to European Commissioners emphasizing the "European" nature of a combined company, in a bid to salvage their deal after antitrust regulators threatened to block it.

The letter was sent by NYSE Euronext Chief Executive Duncan Niederauer and Deutsche Boerse chief Reto Francioni on January 13, and was addressed to European Union Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and also copied to the remaining 27 commissioners, a copy of the letter seen by Reuters shows.

In it, executives from Deutsche Boerse and NYSE Euronext expressed "profound concern" that blocking the takeover "would represent a serious missed opportunity at a critical juncture for Europe."

Earlier this month, European Commission antitrust regulators signaled they would recommend blocking a merger over concerns about creating a dominant player in derivatives, a source told Reuters.

Deutsche Boerse and NYSE have now focused their efforts to convince the so-called college of 27 commissioners that EU antitrust commissioner Joaquin Almunia's conclusions are wrong, and that approving the deal would help advance EU interests.

"The transaction will facilitate the effective implementation of European Union financial services regulation and offer a unique opportunity to deepen regulatory cooperation and reduce the risk of regulatory arbitrage," the letter said.

"If this combination is prohibited by the College of commissioners, the global consolidation of exchanges might very well shift the balance towards countries favoring 'light touch' regulation, which would severely endanger the European Commission's agenda," the letter continued.

In the letter Deutsche Boerse Chief Reto Francioni and NYSE Euronext head Duncan Niederauer said the new company would be domiciled in the European Union and be strictly under European supervision.

Furthermore, 80 percent of the governance of the company and 70 percent of the revenues would be generated within the European Union, the letter said.

"The new company would accelerate the integration of Europe's capital markets, and serve as the vanguard for the implementation of European Union and G20 regulatory reforms," the letter said.

The college of commissioners will give a formal ruling by February 9.

Both executives again emphasized that a review of the deal should look at the derivatives market from a global, rather than just European perspective, and should include the over-the-counter market.

"Contrary to the views expressed by the Directorate General for Competition, effective competition will continue to exist, in particular due to over-the-counter trading, the global nature of the derivatives market, and our strong global rivals.

"For instance, CME, the largest derivatives exchange in the world, competes with us directly in Europe, has more employees in Europe than NYSE Liffe and a larger interest rate derivative portfolio than our combined businesses."

The letter said Europe would be disadvantaged given that the U.S. had approved the merger of Chicago Mercantile Exchange with the Chicago Board of Trade in 2007 to create CME.

The European Commission has demanded Deutsche Boerse and NYSE sell either the Eurex derivatives arm or Liffe, a move that both exchanges have ruled out so far.

German union representatives on Wednesday said they would be pleased if the European authorities blocked the deal. "We had feared there would be grave consequences for Frankfurt as a financial centre if the deal succeeded."

HTC Rezound Ice Cream Sandwich build leaks -- proceed with caution

Stocks finish higher after late-day recovery (AP)

NEW YORK ? A drop in oil prices and strong bond auctions in Europe drove stocks to a slightly higher close Thursday. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose for the fourth straight day.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 21.57 points, or 0.2 percent, to end at 12,471.02 It was down most of the day, losing 64 points in the first hour of trading, following a spike in unemployment claims and a weak report on December retail sales.

Materials and industrial companies led the afternoon recovery. Caterpillar and Alcoa rose the most in the Dow. The S&P 500 finished up 3.02 points, or 0.2 percent, at 1,295.50. The Nasdaq composite rose 13.94 points, 0.5 percent, to 2,724.70

Stocks drove higher in the last hour and a half of trading after oil prices dropped below $100 per barrel for the first time this year. Oil fell on rumors that Europe will delay an embargo on Iran. Crude plunged $2 a barrel in just eight minutes, ending at $99.

Also pushing stocks were strong bond auctions in Italy and Spain. European markets ended mostly higher rose after Italy and Spain held highly successful bond auctions, easing worries about Europe's debt crisis. Italy's benchmark stock index rose 2.1 percent.

In Italy's first bond auction of the new year, the country was able to sell one-year bonds at a rate of just 2.735 percent, less than half the 5.95 percent rate it had to pay last month. That's a signal that investors are becoming more confident in Italy's ability to pay its debts.

Spain was able to raise double the amount of money it had sought to raise in its own bond sale as demand for its debt was strong. Both auctions were seen as important tests of investor sentiment.

Investors have been worried that Italy and Spain, the third- and fourth-largest countries in the euro area, might get dragged into the region's debt crisis. Greece, Ireland and Portugal have been forced to get relief from their lenders after their borrowing costs spiked to levels the countries could no longer afford.

The euro rose nearly a penny against the dollar, to $1.28, as worries eased about Europe's financial woes. The currency, which is shared by 17 European countries, fell to a 16-month low against the dollar the day before.

In other trading, corn futures plunged 6.1 percent to $6.12 per bushel after the government reported that supplies of the grain were higher than traders had expected. Wheat also fell 5.6 percent. An auction of 30-year Treasury bonds drew meager interest from investors as cash flowed back into European debt.

It was the latest day of quiet trading in the stock market. There have been six consecutive days with moves of less than 1 percent in the S&P 500, the quietest stretch since May.

Ralph Fogel, investment strategist and partner at Fogel Neale Partners in New York, said the moderate moves were an encouraging sign following the steep rises and sudden declines that were typical of last summer. "This is a much healthier market than we've seen."

Unemployment benefits spiked last week to the highest level in six weeks, mostly because companies let go of thousands of holiday hires, the government reported. Retail sales barely rose in December and were lower than analysts were expecting.

Despite the mixed news on the economy, investors are starting to focus on the U.S. corporate earnings season, which got under way this week with Alcoa Inc. The aluminum maker predicted stronger demand for its products this year and surprised the market with revenue that was higher than analysts were expecting.

"There's a fair amount of pessimism out there but I also think that investors are slowly becoming immune to the bad news," said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at Harris Private Bank in Chicago. "As long as the stuff you can sink your teeth into, like corporate profit, is improving, I think it bodes well for the markets this year."

Among stocks making big moves:

? Chevron fell 2.6 percent after the world's second-largest publicly traded oil company said its income will be "significantly" below its fourth-quarter results in the prior quarter because of narrower margins on refining and selling fuels.

? CA Inc. jumped 4.3 percent. The hedge fund Taconic Capital disclosed in a regulatory filing that it has taken a 5.1 percent stake in the business software and technology company and is pressing CA to return more cash to shareholders and increase its profit margins.

? Casino operator Wynn Resorts Ltd. fell 2 percent. The company disclosed in a regulatory filing that its vice chairman has filed a lawsuit against the company. Kazuo Okada claims that Wynn has refused to give him access to records relating to a $135 million donation the company made to the University of Macau and other matters.

The microbiome and disease: Gut bacteria influence the severity of heart attacks in rats

ScienceDaily (Jan. 12, 2012) ? New research published online in the FASEB Journal suggests that the types and levels of bacteria in the intestines may be used to predict a person's likelihood of having a heart attack, and that manipulating these organisms may help reduce heart attack risk. This discovery may lead to new diagnostic tests and therapies that physicians use to prevent and treat heart attacks. In addition, this research suggests that probiotics may be able to protect the heart in patients undergoing heart surgery and angioplasty.

"Our discovery is a revolutionary milestone in the prevention and treatment of heart attacks," said John E. Baker, Ph.D., study author from the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. "The biochemical link between intestinal bacteria, their metabolites, and injury to the heart will reduce the risk of death from a heart attack and, coupled with the use of probiotics, will ultimately be able to improve the overall cardiovascular health of the human population."

To make this discovery, Baker and colleagues conducted experiments involving three groups of rats. The first group was fed a standard diet. The second group was treated orally with the antibiotic vancomycin in the drinking water. The third group was fed a probiotic supplement that contains Lactobacillus plantarum, a bacterium that suppresses the production of leptin.

The group treated with the antibiotic had decreased levels of leptin (a protein hormone that plays a key role in appetite and metabolism), which resulted in smaller heart attacks, and improved recovery of mechanical function as compared to the group fed a standard diet. The antibiotic reduced total bacterial numbers in the intestines and altered the abundance of specific types of bacteria and fungi that live in the gut. Treating these rats with leptin was shown to offset the protection produced by the antibiotic treatment. The third group was fed a probiotic that also altered the numbers and types of bacteria and fungi living in the gut. Like those fed the antibiotic, these rats also had decreased leptin levels, resulting in smaller heart attacks and greater recovery of mechanical function as compared to the first group. Treating these rats with leptin also was shown to offset the protection produced by the probiotic.

"We may not be ready to prescribe yogurt to prevent heart attacks, but this research does gives us a much better understanding of how the microbiome affects our response to injury," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of the FASEB Journal. "Just as physicians use cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and overall body composition as measures of heart disease risk, we may soon evaluate our body's susceptibility to disease by looking at the microbes that inhabit the gut."

ING reins in exposure to potentially-bad euro debt (AP)

AMSTERDAM ? ING Groep NV, the bailed-out Dutch bank and insurer, said Friday it sold a further euro1.2 billion ($1.54 billion) worth of bonds issued by southern European nations, as it continues efforts to reduce risks to its balance sheet.

The firm, which is due to split into two by next year, is seeking to alter its business model after running into deep trouble during the financial crisis that started in 2008 following the collapse of U.S. investment bank Lehman Brothers.

Its CEO Jan Hommen said the company's banking arm plans to return to a more traditional approach, relying more on funding from retail depositors and less on financial markets, and investing more in business loans rather than in financial products developed by other banks.

Even after the sales undertaken during the fourth quarter of 2011, ING holds euro2 billion of bonds from southern Europe, mostly from Italy. Worries over the level of debts in a number of euro countries have reduced the market value of their bonds. Greece is negotiating with private creditors to get them to reduce the value of their holdings of Greek debt by 50 percent.

ING is due to report fourth quarter earnings on Feb. 9. and announced new strategy plans at a meeting with investors Friday.

Hommen said the company plans to pay no dividends until it repays the remaining euro3 billion of the euro10 billion in direct aid it received from the Dutch state in 2008. That should be done "as soon as possible," but not necessarily by May 2012 as ING had previously said.

"Given the ongoing crisis in the eurozone and increasing regulatory capital requirements, we need to take a cautious approach and pay special attention to liquidity, funding and capital," Hommen said, abandoning the original deadline.

Shares fell 2.6 percent to euro6.038 in Amsterdam.

"We are not surprised that ING is giving its capital position priority over the repayment of state aid," said analyst Lemer Salah of SNS Securities. "Although the 'less-and-later' aspects of today's message are a disappointment, we feel comfortable with our 'buy' recommendation because of the fundamental attractiveness of what will remain in the medium term."

The EU Commission has ordered ING to split itself into separate insurance and banking companies by 2013 in response to the state support it received during the crisis, which also included the Netherlands assuming most of the risk for ING's portfolio of U.S. mortgage-backed securities. ING plans to sell its European and Asian insurance business, and spin off its U.S. insurance and asset management arm in an initial public offering of shares by the end of 2013.

Though Hommen said regulatory demands were "limiting banks' ability to grow," he laid out the hope that ING's banking arm will prosper by returning to a more traditional model of seeking funding from retail depositors and then lending the money to businesses itself.

In the years before the crisis, European banks generally raised increasing amounts of short-term funding from financial markets and invested in exotic financial products ? such as mortgage-backed securities and derivatives ? that they did not themselves create.

As short term credit markets are increasingly closed to European banks, many have been forced to turn to the European Central Bank for funding. Hommen told investors he would seriously consider taking advantage of the ECB's second offer of three-year funding at 1 percent in February.

"It's too attractive to pass up," he said.

ING's presentation Friday noted it is continuing attempts to sell "non-core" assets to shrink its balance sheet, without elaborating on which.

Hommen said ING's strategy changes will "improve the quality of the overall asset side and produce a better return, with a low risk balance sheet."
